Day 241-243 The Keys

Wednesday -Friday February 18-20, 2026

WEDNESDAY

We pulled up anchor in Boot Key Harbor, Marathon, and pointed the bow toward Stock Island. We knew going in it might be a bit wavy and rolly, but sometimes you just have to go for it. Heading out on the Atlantic side shaved off a lot of miles compared to the Gulf route, which would have meant weaving through restricted areas and around countless islands. Smoother? Probably. Longer? Definitely.

And yes… it was rough. For the first couple of hours especially, we bounced through steady 3–4 footers, getting tossed around more than we would’ve preferred. Thankfully, the seas eased up as the day went on, and despite the ride, it was absolutely beautiful out. I guess we’re slowly earning our sea legs — or at least getting more accustomed to the occasional washing-machine ride!

Arriving at Stock Island Marina felt like a reward. We fueled up, got settled, and took a quick look around before deciding the best possible next activity was obvious: pool time. After lunch, we headed straight there, and wow — that cool water felt amazing after the morning’s adventure. We spent a few blissful hours relaxing, unwinding, and letting the motion of the ocean finally leave our bodies. The evening was quiet and low-key, exactly what we needed after a ride like that.

THURSDAY

Today we hopped on the shuttle into Key West for some exploring. We wandered the streets, did a little shopping, and soaked in the lively island atmosphere before meeting our friends Dave and Cindy for lunch at First Flight Brewery and Grill. We’d been there before and were happy to return — their shaded patio is a lifesaver in the Key West heat, and the food never disappoints.

It was so nice catching up, sharing stories, and enjoying a long, relaxed lunch together. Afterward, we headed back to the marina to tackle laundry — but honestly, when the laundry room sits right next to the pool, it hardly feels like a chore. Laundry and lounging? That’s efficient cruising life at its finest.

FRIDAY

The morning started with Jeff bravely taking on those pesky oil filters (a job no one envies), while I gave the boat a good rinse-down. With chores checked off, we cleaned up and caught the shuttle back into downtown Key West.

First stop of the day: the USCGC Ingham. And yes… I bet you can guess whose idea that was. 🧐 I have to admit, though — it turned out to be fascinating. Launched in 1936, this Treasury-class cutter served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, earning two Presidential Unit Citations and two Navy Combat Action Ribbons. After 52 years of service, she now rests in Key West as a floating museum. Pretty incredible history packed into one ship.

Afterward, we were ready for lunch and stopped at Doc’s on Duval, where we shared a burger and enjoyed a drink upstairs in a wonderfully shady, breezy seating area. The views were perfect for people-watching, and while the service was just okay, the burger was delicious and the relaxed vibe made up for it.

We strolled around a bit more before heading back to the boat for a quiet evening. Tomorrow we point the bow north again — onward to the next chapter of the adventure.
